Gross payment for one qualifying week, not net take-home pay or an eligibility decision. For a new absence beginning on or after 6 April 2026, with a consistent agreed working pattern and SSP entitlement remaining. No waiting-day deduction in this model. Excludes linked/pre-April transition cases, irregular patterns, occupational sick pay and the calculation of average earnings. SSP is normally limited to 28 weeks; confirm remaining entitlement with payroll. Payroll rounding by pay period can differ by a penny.

Work out SSP for a week of sickness

This Statutory Sick Pay calculator helps you check a gross weekly payment when eligibility and remaining entitlement have already been confirmed. It does not estimate your full payslip or add an employer’s occupational sick pay.

Count working days, not every calendar day

The qualifying-day figure is the agreed number of working days in the week. The sick-day figure is how many of those days you were unable to work. For example, someone with five qualifying days who misses three should enter five and three, even if their illness also covers a weekend.

Use the average weekly earnings figure confirmed for SSP purposes. It may differ from a typical week’s salary. Do not replace it with annual salary divided by 52 if payroll uses a different relevant earnings period.

Check the rules for the start of the absence

The model is for new absences beginning from 6 April 2026 under the current statutory basis. It uses the lower of the flat weekly rate and 80% of average earnings. Ask payroll about older linked absences, a changing working pattern or a transition case before using this estimate.

Plan for the difference from normal pay

The result is before tax and National Insurance. If your employer pays more under its own scheme, use the actual expected take-home amount in the monthly budget calculator. A single-week estimate should not be treated as confirmation of an entire absence’s entitlement.

Statutory Sick Pay (SSP): questions answered

Is the SSP result my take-home payment?

No. The result is gross statutory sick pay for the days entered. Payroll may deduct tax and National Insurance and may pay additional contractual sick pay.

Does this calculate remaining SSP entitlement?

No. Confirm with payroll that entitlement remains. The usual statutory duration limit is 28 weeks, and linked absences can affect the amount already used.

Why can partial-week SSP differ by a penny?

This tool rounds the payment up to whole pence using unrounded proration, matching the standard-rate daily tables. Payroll rounding and the pay period used can produce a small difference.
